Glossary (A-Z)

Additionality

An assessment criteria which examines whether a carbon project would have occurred without the additional finance obtained through the sale of the climate benefit

Basalt

Type of rock which can be used in the process of enhanced weathering to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere

Biochar

A carbon rich product created by heating biomass in a low oxygen environment

Biomass

Organic materials from plants that can be used as part of a carbon removal pathway

Carbon avoidance

Activities that prevent the release of CO₂ into the atmosphere

Carbon Cycle

The movement of carbon in various chemical states between the ocean, atmosphere, land, biosphere and geological formation

Carbon Removals

Activities that remove CO₂ from the atmosphere

CDR

Carbon Dioxide Removal are activities that remove CO₂from the atmosphere and durably store it. There are a number of different ways to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (reforestation, Direct Air Capture etc.), as well as different ways of storing the carbon dioxide (geological reservoirs, products etc)

CO₂e

Carbon dioxide equivalent - A metric measure used to compare the emissions from various greenhouse gases on the basis of their global-warming potential (GWP), by converting amounts of other gases to the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide with the same global warming potential

Enhanced weathering

A process that speeds up the naturally occurring mineralisation process. This is typically achieved by crushing an alkaline mineral and spreading it, which increases the speed of CO₂ sequestration

Glasgow climate pact

A climate agreement reached at the end of COP26 calls on 197 countries to strengthen their commitment to meeting the paris agreement

Mineralisation

A chemical process whereby alkaline materials react with CO2 resulting in the formation of carbonate minerals. This is a naturally occurring process which contributes to the natural carbon cycle

Ocean carbon removal

A broad range of project types that interact with the carbon cycle of oceans

Offsets availability
Spot offsets are available for immediate delivery, whereas forward offsets are to be delivered in the near future
Permanence

The period of time for which CO₂ can be safely stored and prevented from re-entering the atmosphere

Paris agreement

A climate agreement agreed in 2016 between parties to the UNFCCC that aims to combat climate change

UNFCCC

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an international environmental treaty which aims to combat climate change

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG)

17 Goals set by the United Nations with the aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Project’s contributions to each goal are listed
