Meet The Pledgers — Christian

Welcome to the second instalment of the Meet The Pledgers series in which we’ll be talking to members of our team to find out what their job involves and get a little glimpse of their day to day lives at work.

Today we’ll be talking to Christian McCaffery, who is one of our software developers and part of the engineering team. Recently Christian has been working on the infrastructure behind our offsetting marketplace.

Why did you apply to work at Pledge?

Pledge appealed to me for a number of reasons. Both the start-up lifestyle and the carbon industry had interested me greatly and combined with the founders’ experience, the opportunity was too good to pass up.

What does a typical day look like in your job?

My day starts with a full engineering stand up, in which the team discusses wider issues and product ideas. This is then followed by some focus time before having a squad-focussed stand up — in which we discuss ongoing updates on specific pieces of work and any blockers that we might be encountering. The rest of the day normally consists of working fairly closely with other squad members and a lot of fresh new feature work.

At lunch we will often either go out for food or if I feel I need a break I’ll use my lunch hour to do some exercise to refresh my mind.

What are your main technical challenges?

Recently we have developed an event-driven system which handles the offsetting side of the product. Experience from within the team and the Chief Product Officer has made the process of developing this CQRS system both enjoyable and rewarding. Having full autonomy for both the code and the cloud infrastructure allowed us to really delve into the system and we now know it inside and out.

What is Pledge Life about for you?

Pledge Life for me is about working as a team to create a product that can make a difference in the world. Our goal is to make it easier for companies to assess and reduce their carbon footprint, and we hope that many more will come onboard in the coming months!

What would you say to someone who might be looking to join your team?

Pledge is a great place to use modern technologies and be given autonomy to help create some of the best climate infrastructure software. The company gives you the opportunity to learn from many knowledgeable developers and be involved in decisions across the product and company.

Further to this, my team members are always happy to help out and it’s been easy to get to know everyone. We regularly hang out together at Friday lunches and have monthly whole company socials with activities like bowling or virtual clay pigeon shooting.

We're looking for new team members!

We’re hiring for a range of roles, including a Full-stack Engineer and a Senior Full-stack Engineer. Take a look at all our vacancies here.
