Meet The Pledgers — Matt
Welcome to the Meet The Pledgers series in which we’ll be talking to members of our team to find out what their job involves and get a little glimpse of their day to day lives at work. We hope it will also give you a flavour of our culture.
Today we’ll be talking to Matt Borghi, who is our Carbon Partnerships Manager. Recently Matt has been working on helping shape the voluntary carbon market through discussions on carbon credits labelling, exploring new carbon removal projects to partner with, as well as working with the offset product team on the carbon offset marketplace.
Why did you apply to work at Pledge?
I think that one of the main barriers to taking climate action is complexity and cost. Pledge’s primary mission is to help companies to easily understand and address their emissions. Being able to contribute to this mission was one of the main reasons I joined.
What does an average day look like in your job?
My days are very varied, which is what keeps things interesting! For example, I could start my day by having a call with a project partner to see how their project is progressing, then moving onto keeping track of how policy is developing within the voluntary carbon market, and finally, having a call with a customer to discuss offsetting.
What criteria do you use when selecting offset projects to work with?
We believe in transparency in the market, which is why we work with independent third parties to assess projects. We also conduct our internal assessments based on the latest criteria within the markets. These include permanence, additionality and verifiability. (You can find out more about them here).
What do you think the future holds for offsetting?
There is a lot of exciting work happening in the world of offsetting. The market is growing rapidly and there is a need to create standards to operate within. I think that we will soon see a divergence between commoditised products and over the counter transactions. And of course it remains to be seen how article 6 will impact the market.
What is Pledge Life about for you?
Being in a startup in a fairly new industry means that things change very quickly, which is exciting and challenging. Working together as a team is vital, as everyone brings a different perspective that moves us forward.
What would you say to someone who might be looking to join Pledge?
It’s a very exciting time to be working in climate tech, as more and more businesses are looking to get started on their sustainability journeys. When it comes to offsetting, there are lots of new carbon removal technologies being developed now that will be vital in the future. Most importantly, it’s great to be working on solutions that will actually have an impact in helping companies address their emissions!
