Pledge and neustark Bring Tech-based CO₂ Removal to New Markets
London, 11 August 2022 — neustark, a company which removes CO₂ from the atmosphere and permanently stores it in recycled concrete, and Pledge, the carbon measurement and offsetting platform, have joined forces to democratize access to carbon dioxide removal technology, bringing it to a wider audience.
Pledge is an embedded climate infrastructure platform that allows carriers and freight forwarders to integrate climate solutions — such as footprint measurement and offsetting — into their customer experience quickly and easily, in order for their customers to get an instant view of emissions and take action.
neustark is pioneering carbon capture solutions making use of the largest global waste stream. The company removes CO₂ from the atmosphere, liquifies it, and permanently mineralizes it in demolished concrete aggregate, which is then further used for the production of new, recycled concrete or road construction. While nature-based solutions pose a risk of captured carbon being re-emitted, neustark’s process ensures that CO₂ is stored permanently. And in turn, the enriched recycled concrete lowers the CO₂ emissions of the construction of new buildings.
Innovative carbon removal technologies of this nature are critical for achieving international climate targets. They are currently more costly compared to traditional nature based and short lived removals. Pledge addresses this challenge by fractionalising neustark removals, offering customers an affordable access point while supporting the further development of a nascent and permanent climate solution.
“We much appreciate this collaboration with Pledge as they have a broad knowledge about the offsetting market and focus on providing high quality carbon removal offsets to their customers,” says Johannes Tiefenthaler, co-founder and co-CEO of neustark.
“The next step in carbon solutions is engineered removals, but it’s in its early days” says David de Picciotto, CEO and co-founder at Pledge. “We’re bringing this project to our platform to continue our mission of helping scale the carbon removals market in a way that’s economically feasible for even the smallest businesses, and make a real difference on their path to net zero.”
neustark was founded in 2019 by Johannes Tiefenthaler and Valentin Gutknecht as an ETH Zurich spin-off. The two young entrepreneurs came together based on their shared vision of a solution for the utilization and storage of CO₂.
In 2020, neustark's first pilot plant was integrated into the production line of an established concrete producer. Today, various concrete producers store CO₂ with one of neustark's mobile plants and produce concrete that is used both in private and public construction projects.
